Wood-to-alcohol plant coming to Michigan

A cellulosic ethanol plant in Michigan will be the first in the nation to produce ethanol from wood on a commercial scale. Cambridge, Mass.-based Mascoma Corp. picked Michigan after being wooed here by the Michigan Economic Development Corp. and NextEnergy, the state's alternative energy industry accelerator.

Scientists from Michigan State University and Michigan Technological University will collaborate with Mascoma to develop and optimize scientific processes and Michigan feedstocks for cellulosic ethanol production.

The production of ethanol from wood chips cuts off complaints about food being diverted to energy.
