New Safety Questions For Toyota

Southfield (WWJ)  -- On the same day Toyota announces a global recall of its Prius hybrid a new safety issue has come to light.

WWJ's Jeff Gilbert reports the latest safety concern involves at least 83 complaints regarding power steering on 2009-2010 Toyota Corollas.

Automotive News reports the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is considering an investigation which would be the first step to determine if a recall is needed.

Toyota has said it will cooperate with any investigation and will open five more centers in the United States to deal with customer complaints.

Because of the blizzard that hit Washington D.C., a House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform hearing involving Toyota recalls has been postponed.

Earlier Tuesday, Toyota announced it would recall its Prius hybrid vehicles because of braking problems.  And State Farm Insurance said it alerted the NHTSA about the Toyota acceleration problems in 2007.

Also, CBS News reports a House investigative report says the cause of the uncommanded acceleration has not been found and shimming the assembly may not be the solution.
