Party Down With Motown

Detroit (WWJ/AP)  -- The birthplace of the Motown sound plans to make some more noise in honor of the record label's 50th anniversary.

The Motown Historical Museum - the original home of Motown Records Corp. - kicks off its Motown 50 Golden Gala this
weekend.  And Motown Museum president and CEO Audley Smith tells WWJ's Pat Sweeting that it will start Friday night at six o'clock with a reunion of sorts at Detroit's Roostertail club.

"We're really looking forward to bringing all of the Motown alumni back to Detroit," Smith said.  From 7-8 p.m., fans can take pictures and get autographs, in what's "evolving into a party," Smith said.

The event is the opening act for the main attraction Saturday at downtown's Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center: an evening of tributes and scheduled performances by Aretha Franklin, The Temptations and duet partners Stevie Wonder and Kid Rock.

Motown founder Berry Gordy plans to appear.  Tickets start at $350 and proceeds benefit the museum.
