Detroit School Stripped of Championship Title

Detroit (WWJ)  -- Detroit Public School officials are taking steps to crack down on bad practices within it's athletic department.

DPS Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb announced Thursday that they are stripping the 2009 Division B Football Championship title from Southwestern High School after finding some players were ineligible.

"I do not fault the players, and do not fault the school staff. In fact the fault lies with the district itself because the district lacks any proper procedures to examine, on an ongoing basis, player eligibility," said Bobb.

Meantime, Odell Bailey, Auditor General for the district, says now they are looking at all of their programs and players.

"We're going to do a district-wide eligibility review where we will select from various sports, and we will determine whether or not those students who participated are indeed eligible," said Bailey.

Bailey says they will also make some changes in the way they handle cash at athletic games after an audit found sloppy practices at six out of ten football games.
