Detroit (WWJ/AP) -- Detroit Police and U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents have seized about $662,000 in suspected drug money after a tip on narcotics activity at a Detroit motel.
The prime suspect in this case is a thirty-year-old Texan who was driving a car with North Carolina plates. He is believed to be in the country illegally.
He's been arrested and is awaiting drug possession charges. Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans talked to WWJ's Pat Sweeting and other reporters about the case.
"What is signifficant is, these are out of state folks from Texas, so there was a signifficant quantity of dope somewhere set for an exchange. And this is the way we're trying to up the anty, in terms of going after more signifficant parts of the drug market," Evans said.
Evans says police had the motel under surveillance about 12 hours when several people left about 9 p.m. Monday and struggled to lift the bag into a car. Police stopped and searched the car not far from the motel.
Evans says that the money seized was neatly bundled and stuffed inside a red duffel bag, and believed to be part of `"an interstate drug deal.''
A small amount of cocaine and marijuana were also found in the car.
