Lansing (WWJ) -- The Democratic party's national leadership is reportedly worried about losing Michigan's governor's office to Republicans next year.
“My sources are telling my that they are 'concerned and they are monitoring,'” reported WWJ Lansing Bureau chief Tim Skubick.
The Democratic next-in-line to current Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm is expected to be Lieutenant Governor John Cherry, Skubick reported in his Friday column.
Skubick also reports that Michigan House Speaker Andy Dillon isn't out of the running for the governorship, although he hasn't announced his candidacy. Dillon is reportedly familiar with President Barack Obama and other White House Democrats, who Skubick's sources have confirmed are watching this race from the sidelines, but themselves have denied this.
Dillon is expected to announce his decision of whether to run or not by the end of November.
“In the past, the Democrats have rapped up every Republican that has run for office with a guy named George Bush. Now, turnaround is fair play. The Republicans are going to rap up John Cherry and the legacy of Jennifer Granholm and say if you loved Granholm's eight years, you're going to love John Cherry,” Skubick said.
Cherry has told Skubick that he doesn't know that Democratic leadership and the White House's Concern of whether he can win the race is the case.
“I think that I can win and if they believe otherwise I think they are wrong. I don't think they believe that [I can't win]. I think that's some story that someone's concocted,” Cherry said. Skubick reported that the Cherry camp believes that the story might have been concocted by Dillon.
In his column, Skubick noted that the Democrats are concerned about whether Cherry can win the election and that in politics, far-fetched possibilities, like Former Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer as a candidate, have “a funny way of becoming reality.”
