Detroit (WWJ) -- Labor icon Dave Moore has died in Detroit. He was 97.
Moore was one of the last surviving members of the 1932 Hunger March that walked to the gates of the Ford Dearborn plant. That march, which was met with tear gas and police, resulted in the deaths of five people.
He was among those whose efforts helped to unionize workers at Detroit's Big Three automakers.
Activist Ron Scott told WWJ's Vickie Thomas that he knew Moore well. "I did an interview with him for the Museum of African-American History, and I talked to him for about four hours about the fact that he was the last Hunger Marcher," Scott said, adding that after learning of the deaths in the march, "(Moore) cried about it."
Scott said that he also talked with him "about working with Coleman Young and others to form Local 600, and had Local 600 not been formed there would have been no UAW, possibly no labor movement."
Detroit political consultant Adolph Mongo said that Moore's dedication is hard to duplicate these days. "We don't have those activists...it wasn't about the money it wasn't about these hidden relationship, it was about justice, about making life better for not only African-Americans but for all workers period. That's what Dave Moore represents," Mongo said.
Visitation is Friday, November 6, from 3-8 p.m. at O.H. Pye III Funeral Home on Plymouth Road near the Southfield Freeway in Detroit. The funeral is 12:30 p.m. Saturday, also at the funeral home, with a family hour at noon.
