Mt. Clemens (WWJ) -- A Macomb County Sheriff's deputy has been placed on administrative leave after shooting a prison inmate to death inside the emergency room at Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center.
Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel Friday identified the 32-year old man who died as Jamin Totty from Chesterfield Township. Hackel said Totty somehow got out of his handcuffs and tried to escape after he was taken to the hospital's emergency room claiming he had a medical emergency. Hackel says Totty was somehow able to pick up a syringe needle and lunged toward the deputy. Hackel says security video shows the deputy backing up before firing one shot.
HEAR THE INTERVIEW:
No one else was injured in the shooting.
Hackel says Totty was jailed after violating his probation following a retail fraud charge.
Hackel says the officer that fired the fatal shot is a veteran deputy with an outstanding record in the department. There will be an internal investigation to determine how the inmate was being transported to the emergency room.
