Swine Flu Clinics Set At EMU, Palace

Ypsilanti (WWJ)  -- More swine flu clinics on tap today in Metro Detroit.

About 40 people are waiting outside the Eastern Michigan University Convocation Center not for the swine flu shot, but wrist bands, so they can come back at a later time for the shot.

Steve Swanson of Ann Arbor, first in line since 5 a.m., likes the idea.

"There was an  earlier opportunity there were literally thousands of people lined up it was chaotic, police cars, hopefully this will work better with wrist bands this time," Swanson told WWJ's Ron Dewey.

The Washtenaw County Health Department had cancelled school-based vaccination clinics after being overwhelmed with hundreds of residents.

Meanwhile, the Oakland County Health Division will offer H1N1 flu vaccine shots for Oakland County residents today from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Health officials say people shouldn't arrive early due to the fact that the Palace doors will not be open until 2:00 pm.

Since the supply of H1N1 vaccine is limited, only target population will receive the shots.

The target population is identified as:
" Pregnant women
" Children and young adults 6 months through 24 years of age
" Caregivers for children under 6 months of age
" Adults 25 through 64 years of age with underlying medical conditions
" Healthcare and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) workers

"Due to the overwhelming response to the three 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine distribution  clinics already held, we are moving to a large venue. The Palace has ample parking and with its open floor plan, it is our hope to have abundant space indoors for people in line," said Kathy Forzley, Manager/Health Officer, Oakland County Health Division, in a statement.  "We strongly encourage only those in the target population for Oakland County to visit this clinic and get vaccinated against H1N1".
