State Lawmaker Wants To Reverse Same-Sex Marriage Ban
Lansing (WWJ) -- A state lawmaker from Washtenaw County wants to overturn Michigan's ban on same-sex marriage.
Pam Byrnes of Lyndon Township has introduced a resolution to amend the state constitution to allow same-sex marriage. Voters in Michigan instituted the ban in 2004 by approving Proposal 2.
WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick says that Byrnes has "been working on this issue for quite a while" and has introduced what amounts to "a constitutional amendment to undo what Michigan voters did."
Byrnes says this is an "economic issue." She says young people want to go to cities and communities that are progressive and accepting of people.
Skubick calls the move by Byrnes "curious," noting that there has been some movement in the national polls towards same-sex marriage, although he doesn't feel sentiment in Michigan has changed enough to overturn the 2004 vote.
