Given the changing requirements for success in the work place, it has become even more important for teachers to demonstrate the relevance of lessons learned in the classroom and their relationship to the real world.
Always looking for a teachable moment, Mike Blasko, math teacher at Edsel Ford High School in Dearborn, found a perfect example of relevance and relationship after reading an article in the Detroit News.
The article featured a team of PhDs at Ford Motor whose education in mathematics, physics, statistics, economics, and engineering are helping the company set pricing, plan production, and develop the right mix of features for new Ford products.
Blasko’s class sent e-mails to the reporter who wrote the story and a connection was made with Rose Peng, manager in the revenue management and global lifecycle analytics department at Ford Motor. Peng will visit Edsel Ford High School, 20601 Rotunda, Dearborn, on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 7:15 a.m. She will talk with a group of 100 Algebra II, Pre-calc and Calculus students about her team’s efforts in helping Ford with their most recent financial success and competitive product line. Peng will also discuss her experience attending school in China.
“I have told my students many times that they will be competing with math talent from around the globe and Ms. Peng's visit will certainly bring valuable insight to how that really plays out in our global economy,” Blasko said.
