Lansing (WWJ) -- State health officials say Michigan is being hit by the worst flu season in years, with the swine flu sickening tens of thousands of people.
The illness, including the H1N1 strain, has sent hundreds to the hospital, closed nearly 600 schools, and killed 16 people. Five of those deaths were in Metro Detroit. The "Michigan Disease Surveillance System" says that over 418,000 cases were reported to them as of last week.
Health officials say those who have died in Michigan ranged in age from 27 to 72, and most had underlying health conditions. Of the five deaths in Metro Detroit, two occurred in Wayne County, and one each in Oakland, Macomb and Livingston counties.
