Lansing (WWJ) -- Is this really in the playbook or is it simply a trick play?
George Perles, the 75-year-old former Michigan State University football coach, says he plans to run for governor -- and adds that it's not a joke.
He told The Detroit News that he'll begin his campaign after New Year's Day. When asked what he'll bring to Lansing -- Perles answered: "a football atmosphere -- with an offensive coordinator and a defensive coordinator."
But WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick is skeptical. "I think this political world in this town would be absolutely shocked if the 75-year old football coach actually got in this game. First of all, he can't win the Democratic nomination because (Michigan Lt. Governor) John Cherry's basically got it wrapped up," he said.
Perles cites his experiences in the state's athletic, political and charitable arenas as reasons why he has enough experience for the job. He's been a member of MSU's Board of Trustees since 2006.
"Who knows, in this game, anything is possible," said Skubick.
Two websites were registered last year for a potential Perles gubernatorial run, though neither contains any information or any direct connection to Perlas. Both http://georgeperlesforgovernor.com/ and http://georgeperlesforgovernor.net/ were registered to a Texas man.
