More Swine Flu Vaccine Available Monday Morning

Taylor (WWJ)  -- Another round of swine flu shots for residents in Detroit and Wayne County starting Monday morning.

More nasal mist vaccine shipments have arrived at the Wayne County health department.

Up until now, they've only had the injection type vaccine available to limited at-risk groups such as pregnant women, younger children, caregivers, essential personnel and those 50 and older with underlying health issues. The nasal spray will be for those ages 2 to 24, along with those 25 to 49 who either live or care for a child 6 months and younger, or are health care or emergency medical personnel.

The nasal spray will be available at walk-in clinics in Taylor, Redford and Wayne.

WWJ's Ron Dewey reports at least 15 people were waiting outside the Taylor Human Services Center on Eureka Road since 4:30 Monday morning.  People waited in their cars until one of them got out and camped their folding chair, blanket and hot drink at the door. Then, others followed suit.

One man, identifying himself as Grandpa Dan, had a folding chair  with a sign reserving three spots for his grand kids. He's not getting the shot himself at least now.  He says it was frustrating trying to arrange an appointment over the phone...and no one was answering his call.

"Why have us make an appointment when its not possible?" he exclaimed, noting that was the reason why he showed up outside the clinic at 5:30 a.m.

Vickie Yannatta of Westland waited in the cold outside the Taylor Human Services Center since 4:30 Monday morning.  She had waited three hours last week and they ran out.

"I believe they were overwhelmed because they had 5 cops and a K9, " she recalled.  "I think it was because there were so many people who were turned away they didn't know what to expect or how they would react when they didn't get their shot."

Like some of the more than two dozen people in line, Linda Jones of Dearborn is here, but not for herself.

"I have a grandchild on the way, and I watch another...the pregnant one has been done now the grandmas have to be done so the grandmas are here."

In Detroit, vaccines will be provided Monday from 11 to 3 at the Northwest Activities Center.

The state health department will have an update Monday afternoon on the spread of H1N1 in Michigan.
