Southfield (WWJ) -- Fred Marx, a business leader and co-founder of the Marx Layne public relations firm, died Sunday. He was 67. A statement from his company said Marx suffered heart failure at his Bloomfield Hills home.
Marx and Michael Layne started the PR company in 1987.
“Fred was a wonderful friend and business partner,” said Layne in a statement. “He deeply loved his wife and children. He loved people and was genuinely interested in them. Everybody knew Fred Marx and Fred knew everybody. He loved work. His clients and employees were like family to him. He was creative and brilliant and will be missed greatly.”
Before starting his own company, Marx was senior vice president at Dayton Hudson.
“Fred was an incredibly personable gentleman who got along with everyone,” said Joseph L. Hudson Jr. “He came into Hudson’s at an important time and showed great leadership. He was a friend who cared about the community while at Hudson’s and continued to care about the community. He will be greatly missed.”
Marx was often quoted in stories relating to retail.

“I don’t know what this city is going to do without Fred Marx,” said Florine Mark, President and Chair of the Board of The WW Group and longtime friend, in a statement. “He was the kindest, smartest, most terrific man.”
Sheldon Toll, a retired partner of Honigman Miller said Marx knew everyone and "was the unofficial mayor of metro Detroit.”
Marx is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Sally Sloman Marx; two daughters, Julie and Carolyn and two sons, Andrew and Scott.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 3, at 2 p.m. at Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Hills. Arrangements are being handled by Ira Kaufman Chapel.
