THE WORLD IN TECH

Oracle: Justice Department OKs Sun deal
Business software maker Oracle Corp. said Thursday it has received the Justice Department's approval to move forward with its $7.4 billion acquisition of former dot-com-era star Sun Microsystems Inc. The deal still needs to get the go-ahead from the European Commission. Clearance by the Justice Department had been held up over questions about the licensing of Java, a programming language that Sun invented that now runs on more than 7 billion electronic devices around the world, including cell phones and personal computers. More.

Feds file age discrimination suit against AT&T
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said Thursday it filed an age-discrimination lawsuit against AT&T Inc., the country's largest telecommunications provider. The EEOC says AT&T discriminated against older employees by denying them the chance to be rehired solely because they retired under early retirement plans. The effect of this denial, the agency said, leads to a disproportionate number of older workers not having the same opportunity to apply for re-employment with the company as younger workers. This, the agency says, amounts to age discrimination. More.

Accused credit card hacker lived large in Miami
Nestled near a row of sultry, silvery-green palm trees and a 205-foot-long infinity pool, room 1508 at the National Hotel on South Beach is a portrait of Art Deco luxury. It is also where, on May 7, 2008, federal agents seized two computers, $22,000 in cash and a Glock 9 gun from a man known on the Internet as "soupnazi." His real name is Albert Gonzalez, and he was with his girlfriend when federal agents arrived. Just as the setting was not run-of-the-mill, neither was the arrest. Gonzalez was charged with hacking into business computer networks and stealing credit and debit card accounts -- and in an embarrassing twist, he had once been an informant for the U.S. Secret Service. This week, Gonzalez, 28, was indicted in New Jersey on more federal charges. Now the biggest credit card hacks of the decade -- totaling 170 million accounts -- have been pinned on Gonzalez. Industry analysts marveled at the scope of the operation -- which Gonzalez allegedly dubbed "Get Rich or Die Tryin'." One compared it to a hackers' version of the 1980s gangster movie "Scarface." But doing it alone with no help from the Web doesn't make much sense nowadays. Thus, this of resources for students to use when they head back to college. Whether it's finding textbooks or getting help with tough subjects, every student should use at least some of these sites. More.

Stocks: Shares advance on more signs of economic pickup
More signs that the economy is creeping toward recovery encouraged investors to move further into stocks -- but at a cautious pace. Stocks rose moderately Thursday in very light volume. There were no dramatic economic reports, but a smattering of positive data convinced investors to take more chances on stocks. Financials were particularly in demand after a report quoting American International Group Inc.'s CEO as saying the company will repay its bailout loans from the government. News from the Philadelphia Federal Reserve of a pickup in mid-Atlantic manufacturing also lifted the market, having offset a weaker-than-expected Labor Department report on first-time claims for unemployment. More. The Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP) rose 19.98 points or 1 percent to 1,989.22. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ($INDU) rose 70.89 points or 0.8 percent, to 9,350.05. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index ($SOX) rose 2.99 points or 1 percent to 296.41. The Morgan Stanley High Tech 35 Index (MSH) rose 4.9 points or 1 percent to 496.92. The NYSE Arca Pharmaceutical Index (DRG) rose 0.61 points or 0.2 percent to 280.95. The NYSE Arca Biotech Index (BTK) rose 12.23 points or 1.4 percent to 872.18. Finally, the Standard & Poor's 500 (SPX) rose 10.91 points or 1.1 percent to 1,007.37.
