MSU gets grant for unique engineering program
Michigan State University has been awarded a three-year grant by the National Science Foundation to establish a first-of-its-kind Research Experiences for Teachers in Engineering Site program on Bio-Inspired Technology and Systems. The RET site aims to train a cadre of leaders of middle and high school teachers in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics by engaging them in cutting-edge research in diverse areas, such as artificial muscles, robotic fish, biosensors, biomechanics, biofuels, digital evolution and biomolecular engineering.

Tigers go 'On Demand' for devoted fans
If you just can't get enough of the Detroit Tigers on TV, there's very good news for you. Comcast Corp., Fox Sports Detroit and the Detroit Tigers Friday announced the launch of "Fox Sports Detroit: Tigers On Demand," a new cable channel that gives Tigers fans unprecedented access to complete Tigers game action and related programming anytime they want. The channel is available at no additional cost to Comcast Digital Cable customers in Michigan. More.

Guardian site named best of the web
Guardian SunGuard’s commercial glass program’s website www.sunguardglass.com was chosen “Best of the Web” for primary glass manufacturer websites in USGlass magazine’s second annual Web Awards contest. "All of the websites were nominated by readers of the USGNN.com newsletter and were ranked on a scale of 1 to 5 for each of the criterion used by judges for the Webby Awards, the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet,” said USGlass magazine editor Megan Headley. ConnecTech, ATT host forum on Future of Mobility
ConnecTech Detroit, Automation Alley's organization for technology professionals, will co-host with AT&T an event to address how mobile technologies will continue to change the way we work and live. The event, titled Mobile Solutions, will be held Thursday, Aug. 20 at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham. The event brings together some of the brightest professionals and leading business providers to
discuss the ways in which mobile technologies continue to evolve and how business is conducted. More.

Stimulus $$ means new lab, courses for Kettering
Kettering University will get a new electronics lab and will partner with the University of Michigan on new courses as its share in the $1 billion from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Kettering will receive about $500,000 of a $2.5 million grant from federal stimulus money, according to an announcement Wednesday in Detroit by Vice President Joe Biden. The announcement is part of $1 billion that is coming to Michigan from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. More.

Microsoft Sharepoint Thrives in Recession
While sales of Windows has fallen this year, sales of Microsoft's Sharepoint software have jumped, according to The New York Times. Companies use the software to build their public websites and to promote project collaboration internally. Because it works in concert with other Microsoft products, businesses are finding it a more affordable solution than custom-built internal systems. More.
