Brownstown Township (WWJ) -- Reports Friday morning suggested that General Motors was poised to pick Brownstown Township as its home for a new battery plant.
The facilty would make the lithium ion battery packs to go into GM electric vehciles, such as the extended range Chevy Volt due out next year. Those batteries would be assembled from cells made in Korea.
The $43 million investment would create about 600 jobs. GM isn’t commenting but reports said that the automaker was preparing a celebration in the Downriver community in early August to make the official announcement.
Brownstown and the state of Michigan have come through with tax breaks and the likely location is said to be in the Brownstown Business Center, an industrial park east of I-75, between Sibley and King roads.
