A group of Detroit-area high school students interested in pursuing engineering careers will be given the opportunity to explore fuel cell technology in the latest challenge offered by SAE International’s A World In Motion program.
The ninth- through 12th-grade students in the Horizons-Upward Bound program at Cranbrook Schools will participate in the challenge at SAE International’s Automotive Headquarters in Troy Tuesday, July 14 at 6:30 p.m.
Janine Scott, a middle school teacher in the Detroit Public School system, has volunteered to work with the students to introduce the Fuel Cell Challenge. A former engineer, Scott was instrumental in field-testing the latest AWIM curriculum.
“AWIM engages students and demonstrates the career possibilities available to them if they study math and science,” Scott said. “The Fuel Cell Challenge explores the parts of an alternative fuel car, discusses why alternative fuels are important, and shows how the fuel cell powers the car. Then students build the car and make it run.”
AWIM brings math and science principles to life through highly interactive learning experiences that incorporate the laws of physics, motion, flight and electronics. Funded by the SAE Foundation, the program was recognized by the National Science Foundation with the 2008 Public Service Award.
