Churches Call For Citizen Safety Patrol

Detroit (WWJ)  -- Together with police, Detroit church leaders are calling on their congregants to help keep the city's streets and children safe.

Bishop Edgar Vann of Second Ebenezer Church, along with 50 pastors and local law enforcement officers, Wednesday  announced a plan to have their congregants and others volunteer to patrol inside and outside of the schools.

Vann also asked the school district to implement a peaceable schools program and mandatory conflict resolution and violence prevention curriculum in the schools, and he's calling for 31 days of prayer in August leading up to the start of the school year.

Newly appointed Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans was on hand for the announcement.

"This is absolutely the best chance, the best possibility, we have to reduce violence in the city of Detroit. Not just school violence -- but violence period," Evans said.

Those interested in volunteering to patrol Detroit Public Schools with the Kingdom Alliance Covenant Fellowship can call Second Ebenezer Church at (313) 867-4700.
