Sources tell WWJ that Detroit Police Chief James Barren will be replaced soon by Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans.
Barren, who joined the department in 1973 at the age of 22, was appointed to the chief's job by acting Mayor Ken Cockrel Jr. last September.
Evans, who is a lifelong Detroit resident, joined the Wayne County sheriff's department in 1970. He became sheriff in 2003, and made an unsuccessful bid for the mayor's office earlier this year.
Sources say the official announcement should happen early next week.
Karen Dumas, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing's spokeswoman, said Friday that there the administration had no announcement, and that Barren remains chief "at this time."
