Romulus (WWJ) -- A police standoff at a hotel near Detroit Metropolitan Airport ended shortly before 8:30 Friday morning with the suspected gunman and one other person in custody.
Police said the situation began around 2 a.m. in Taylor with a traffic stop, which led to a police chase down I-94 to the nearby Best Western, near I-94 and Merriman just north of the airport in Romulus.
Cpl. Joe Trigg, with the Downriver SWAT Team that converged on the hotel, said, "After the car chase, there was a crash. Taylor officers and Romulus officers conducted a search at which point they located him in the weeds somewhere. And at that point he had a gun on him which he was threatening to commit suicide."
The suspect barricaded himself in a second-floor room. WWJ's Vickie Thomas reported that his mother was among those in the hotel room. She was escorted out by police during the standoff.
The gunman tossed a 9 mm gun out into the hallway following negotiations. A second person in his vehicle was taken into custody shortly after the chase began.
