Four Missing Fishermen Found On Lake Erie

Monroe (WWJ)  -- Four fishermen reported missing on Lake Erie were found Friday afternoon clinging to an overturned boat.

Speaking live on WWJ, U.S. Coast Guard Commander David Beck said deputies on a Monroe County Marine Division boat found the Lansing-area men around 5:45 p.m. near Middle Sister Island.

Family members identified the boaters as Douglas Whittaker, Roy Letson, Larry Vert and Ron Miller.

Beck said the men were rescued and were on their way to a harbor and from there would be taken to a hospital.  At least one of the men had hypothermia.

"Our concern is getting them to medical care quickly," Beck said.  He couldn't say how the 19-foot boat overturned.

The men went fishing off of Sterling State Park at 8 a.m. Thursday.  They were expected back at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, but never returned.  Family members called police Thursday night to report the men missing.

The men had cell phones, but may have been disabled when the boat overturned.

Boats, helicopters  and airplanes from the U.S. Coast Guard, Canadien Coast Guard and Monroe County, Ottawa County and Lucas County Sheriff's Department were involved in the search.

Family members say the group had life jackets, it wasn't clear early Friday afternoon if the men were wearing them or not.
