Armored Truck Makes Deposit On I-75

Detroit (WWJ)  -- It wasn't an accident that slowed traffic on I-75 in Detroit Thursday morning.  It was blowing money.

A bin from an armored truck fell out the side door spilling hundreds of bills onto the freeway.  It's not clear why or how the door opened.

Police blocked traffic in order to pick up the money.  Drivers were slowed for as many as five miles as police worked to pick up the loose cash.

Drivers say police were surrounding the money as it blew on the shoulder of the freeway between Caniff and Clay.

Michigan State Police say an undetermined amount of money spilled onto the freeway and they aren't sure if all of it was recovered.

As part of the investigation, troopers will be talking with the armored truck driver.

WWJ Newsradio 950 listener Marva Brown was driving to work and passed the spill.  She said the bills appeared to be 20's and 100's.   "It was big money, it was not a dollar or five dollar bills," Brown told WWJ's Roberta Jasina and Greg Bowman.

She didn't stop to pick up the money because police officers were on the scene.  She did say if she had been driving by earlier she may have stopped.

Listen to more of WWJ's coverage from 8:30 a.m.:

WWJ's Vickie Thomas said people along the freeway were looking for money in trees and knee-high grass.  One person joked "this is the stimulus package right here."
