Community Waits To Learn More About Body Found Along River

Raisinville Township (WWJ/AP)  -- Monroe police believe that a child's body found near the River Raisin in southeast Michigan is likely that of 5-year old Nevaeh Buchanan, who had been missing for nearly two weeks.

No arrests had been announced Saturday morning.  Investigators are hoping to learn the cause of death later in the day.

During a news conference Friday morning, Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield said they are still searching for a suspect.

"To our knowledge, that person is still out there in the community," Crutchfield said. "In my opinion, it is a very sick or disturbed person we are looking for. A person who is able to abduct and murder an innocent 5-year old child," he said.

Authorities say a fisherman had found the body and called police.  An area near the river in Raisinville Township, about 35 miles south-southwest of Detroit, was cordoned off as police conducted their investigation Thursday night.

Nevaeh's maternal grandmother, Sheri Buchanan, who had custody of the girl, told WWJ that clothing on the girl's body matched what the girl was wearing when she disappeared, but they're waiting for DNA testing as a formality.

"They told me they can not be for sure until the DNA testing comes back, and me and my son (are) going to go identify her," she said.

Nevaeh Buchanan was last was seen May 24 in the parking lot of her apartment complex in nearby Monroe.

Two people who have been mentioned as persons of interest, George Kennedy and Roy Smith, remain jailed.  Kennedy told the Toledo Blade he didn't know what happened to Nevaeh.  Kennedy is a convicted sex offender.
