Detroit (WWJ) -- It may be the sign of the times. With unemployment rising and tough economic times, anything that is free will draw a crowd.
Saturday it was free dental care at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. The Michigan Department of Community Health set up the clinic to provide free dental care and oral health education for adults in need of emergency services.
The event was scheduled from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. But organizers were turning people away after one hour, according to WWJ's Stephanie Davis. More than 1,000 people were in line at 10 a.m.
More than 200 volunteers were providing free basic dental services such as fillings, extractions, and minor denture repair to low income adults on a first-come first-serve basis.
The governor called for the Michigan Day of Oral Health Outreach initiative earlier this year in her State of the State address.
Future clinics are planned. Click here for more information on free or low fee dental care.
