Lansing (AP) -- Michigan's hospitals say they are being squeezed by the recession and could use some help from the federal stimulus package.
The Michigan Health and Hospital Association told the state House Health Policy Committee a growing number of patients are unable to pay for their own care.
A survey of Michigan hospitals found that uncompensated care increased 8 percent in the third quarter of 2008 compared with the same period in 2007.
Charity cases at hospitals may have increased by about 40 percent last year, according to preliminary reports. The rise in uncompensated care translates to more hospitals losing money.
