Southfield (WWJ) -- A five year old Mt. Clemens girl is among three young people killed as a result of accidents caused by icy roads. Freezing rain and sleet caused roads and freeways to turn into ice rinks Tuesday evening. Dozens of accidents were reported.
The Livingston County sheriff's department says five-year old Danica Cox was killed when the SUV she was in slid off I-96 near M-59, went down an embankment and hit a tree.
Investigators say the girl's father was driving when he lost control due to icy roads around 10:15 p.m. Timothy Cox, his wife and a seven year old boy were taken to Sparrow Hospital for treatment of injuries.
Michigan State Police in Ypsilanti say an 18-year old Kalamazoo area girl was killed when the car she was in slid into the back end of a semi-tractor trailer just before 8 p.m. Tuesday.
A statement says three other people in the car were taken to the University of Michigan medical center for minor injuries. The victim, whose name wasn't released early Wednesday, wasn't wearing a seatbelt, according to investigators. She was in the back seat when the accident happened.
State Police troopers say icy roads and driving too fast for the conditions led to the accident.
The Branch County sheriff's department says 16-year-old Michael Lung of Burr Oak died after he lost control of the car he was driving Tuesday night, striking a post and tree in Bronson Township, south of Battle Creek.
Michigan State Police troopers closed several area freeways as a result of treacherous driving conditions Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.
Portions of I-96, I-94, I-75, I-275, U.S. 23, the Southfield Freeway, and the Van Dyke Freeway were all shutdown late Tuesday. Click here for complete traffic information.
In Harper Woods, a fire engine slid off the road and hit a utility pole near Vernier and I-94. No injuries were reported in the accident.
