Detroit (WWJ) -- A raid on a suspected house of prostitution on Detroit's westside led to a number of arrests and surprise for authorities involved.
Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans says the mother of a 16-year-old girl hosted the sex-for-cash party. The woman's daughter and another teenager were dancing partially nude when officers from the Sheriff's Department, Detroit Police, FBI and Michigan State Police entered the home on Cherrylawn near Curtis about 4 a.m. Sunday.
Acting on a tip, police were able to get an undercover officer inside the home to verify the activity. Approximately 20 adult men inside the home were required to pay a $15 cover charge, plus other cash for dancing and whatever the prostitute charged for sex. 19 adult women were inside the home.
It is not clear whether either of the 16-year olds were offering sex for money.
“It’s pretty safe to assume that it would have lead to that eventually in that environment. Thankfully, we were able to shut this party down before things got that far,” Evans said in a statement.
According to the sheriff, most of the prostitutes and johns were ticketed and released, but the girl’s mother was arrested, as were three men who appeared to be operating the party. All face charges of operating a house of Illegal occupation. The mother likely will face additional charges.
The woman’s daughter has been taken into protective custody and the other juvenile was released to her parents.
Officers confiscated three handguns along with marijuana, ecstasy pills and heroin, along with several hundred dollars in cash.
A raid in March shut down a similar operation running out of a home near Hubbel and Schoolcraft in Detroit.
