Hearing In Beatty Case Today, Plea Bargain Possible?

Detroit (WWJ)  -- Three days of hearings are to begin today in the case involving Christine Beatty, the former chief of staff for ex-mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys will argue over which evidence will be allowed in Beatty's trial, which is scheduled to begin January 5th.

The hearings will take place before Wayne County Circuit Court in Judge Tim Kenny's courtroom at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice in downtown Detroit.

Beatty is charged with perjury, misconduct and obstruction of justice. Beatty and Kilpatrick were accused of lying during a whistle-blowers' trial about being romantically involved.

They also denied their roles in the firing of a police official, but text messages between the two contradicted their statements.

Beatty's attorneys are expected to argue the messages are protected under federal law.

The hearings and trial could be off if Beatty accepts a plea bargain.  Detroit Free Press sources say Beatty could agree to a deal Monday morning before the hearings begin.
