Overdue Audit: Insurance Crisis

Detroit (WWJ) -- The city of Detroit could face an insurance crisis if it fails to complete an overdue audit by the end of the month.
Before it comes to that, City Councilwoman, Sheila Cockrel, who chairs the Budget, Finance, and Audit standing committee, hopes a meeting between city and state officials next week will yield a compromise and seek an extension that was due last June.
This extension will allow the continuation of self-insuring fleeted vehicles, including police, fire, and garbage trucks.
Cockrel says that city needs a break from the state.
“We cannot be in a situation where police cars cannot run, fire trucks cannot run, and deputy vehicles cannot operate.” Cockrel said.
The Secretary of State needs the audit to determine if Detroit can continue to afford itself or the need to purchase private insurance.
