Teacher Absences Force School Closure

Redford Township (WWJ)  -- There was no class Monday for some 900 students at Redford Union's Hilbert Middle School.

Superintendent Donna Rhodes told WWJ that she had to close the school after 26 teachers called in sick.  Rhodes said there is a labor dispute between the district and the teachers.

"The...unfortunate thing is that we have had, last week, some very positive negotiations with the teachers' union," Rhodes said.

Rhodes said another negotiation session was set for 10 a.m. Monday.

Any substitute teachers were going to be sent to elementary schools in the district that had also seen a higher-than-normal teacher absentee rate today.

The teachers are working under an imposed contract and are at odds with the district over pay and health care.
