More Text Messages Released

Detroit (WWJ)  -- Hundreds of text messages, some sexually explicit, between former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff Christine Beatty were released Thursday afternoon.

Attorneys for Beatty, Kilpatrick's one-time top aide, tried to keep them sealed, but Wayne County Judge Tim Kenny ordered them on the public record, and the Michigan Court of Appeals refused to stop him.

More than 550 pages of text messages and other court documents were released.

One series of messages from November 2003 goes on for more than an hour as Beatty describes what she would do with Kilpatrick if they were together.

"Don't STOP! PLEASE,'' Kilpatrick replies.

During the same exchange, Beatty texted Kilpatrick: "I Love You So Much" and you say "I Love You too" and kiss my neck so soft.

The exchange ends with Beatty replying "I Love You Kwame Malik Kilpatrick. Thank you for every experience."

Kilpatrick responds "Anytime.... Love you too, Christine Lynn Rowland-Beatty!"

The court filing also contains a message to an unidentified woman, who told Kilpatrick in July 2003 that she has "goose bumps'' and can't wait to see him.

The messages were filed by prosecutors to show that Kilpatrick and Beatty sent and received them on city pagers.

"Wouldn't the mayor of a major American city complain to someone if he was receiving these types of messages by accident?'' assistant prosecutor Robert Moran wrote.

The messages are just a portion of the thousands possessed by prosecutors. But they help form the backbone of the case against Beatty, who is charged with perjury and obstruction of justice over her testimony in a civil trial last year.

Prosecutors support the release, but Beatty's lawyers say the contents could turn potential jurors against Beatty.

The judge said he wouldn't unseal any that would jeopardize attorney-client privilege or communication between spouses.

Beatty and Kilpatrick last year in court denied having an extramarital affair. But messages published in January by the Detroit Free Press revealed a steamy relationship and sparked eight months of political turmoil at City Hall.

Kilpatrick, pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice on Sept. 4 and is scheduled to go to jail for 120 days Tuesday.

Beatty has turned down offers to plead guilty and is headed for trial January 5.  A motion hearing is scheduled for early December.
