Oakland Schools Showing Off Renovated Tech Centers

Oakland Schools' four newly renovated Technical Campuses will open the doors to the public on Sunday, Nov. 9 from 2 to 5 p.m. The open house will showcase the results of two phases of renovations which, combined with an updated curriculum, now provides Oakland County high school students with exciting new learning choices for their junior and senior years.

The open houses will give the community an opportunity to experience the new Oakland Schools Technical Campuses, where students enjoy state-of-the-art classrooms, equipment and curriculum as they prepare for college and employment.

These are no longer your father’s “voc ed centers” built more than 35 years ago, but rather newly designed rigorous high school programs designed to prepare today’s students for tomorrow’s careers in areas such as engineering and emerging technologies such as biotechnology and environmental sciences. Classic offerings such as cosmetology and auto repair continue to be offered in addition to instruction on the latest advances in health sciences and transportation technology.

The four campuses, located in Clarkston, Pontiac, Royal Oak, and Wixom, educate area high school juniors and seniors for half of their school day at no cost to their sending school districts. Funding for the campus programs and renovations comes from a countywide vocational education millage. Project partners for the renovations are Skanska USA Building and Integrated Design Solutions.

Oakland Schools invites you to come to your neighborhood campus to find out more about today’s technical campuses and the doors they can open for Oakland County students. A formal program including a video welcome by Oakland Schools Superintendent Dr. Vickie L. Markavitch and Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony by area superintendents and legislators will take place at 2:30 p.m. at each campus. Student-led tours and demonstrations will run from 2 to 5 p.m. Light refreshments prepared by students will be served. For more information, including campus locations, please visit www.oakland.k12.mi.us/grandreopening or call (248) 209-2194.
