Here’s a quick re-cap of this week’s WWJ Eye on Michigan Politics program.
As usual, it’s moderated by Marie Osborne and the panel includes Todd Cook, Kerry Ebersole, John Truscott and me -- Greg McNeilly. This week’s show included:
POTENTIAL DETROIT MAYORAL CANDIDATE BELLA MARSHALL
Bella Marshall, Wayne County's chief operating officer, says she won't announce--one way or the other--if she's running for the mayor's office in Detroit. She tells EOMP, when asked: "No comment." She praises former Governor Bill Milliken. Says Detroit faces flat revenues and the challenge of continuing city services. Marshall says Detroit has never come back since the oil-embargo of 1975. She says we need to support the new mayor and focus on him rather than the upcoming mayoral elections.

FORD MOTOR COMPANY’S BRUCE ANDERSON
Ford Motor Company's Bruce Andrews talks about a bill before Congress that would loan the auto company's $25 billion to revamp for the future. What happens if the Big Three don't get the loan? Andrews tells EOMP: There is no Plan B. Anderson blames the economy, not the Big 3’s structural short-comings for their current predicament.

OAKLAND COUNTY PROSECUTOR CANDIDATE DAVID LAW
State Representative David Law, the Republican candidate for Oakland County Prosecutor, says he should be the choice for the job because he has actually spent time in the office. (His opponent, former Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Jessica Cooper, spent three decades on the bench.) Law has 10 years of public service protecting families. Dave details his plan to protect Oakland seniors and families.

DEBATE NEGOTIATORS RICHARD McLELLAN & MARK FOX
EOMP presents an insider's view of political debates: Richard McLellan negotiated on behalf of Republican candidate Dick DeVos during the 2006 gubernatorial race; and Mark Fox negotiated on behalf of Governor Jennifer Granholm. Both say: You're always negotiating to play to your candidate's strength, and steer away from the weaknesses. McLellan notes that political debates are theatrical and outdated, really unchanged since 1960, and need a new format and medium. McLellan thinks that Friday’s debate provides both opportunities and risks for both candidates but that McCain has to change the game with its impact. Fox concedes McCain has more experience on national security.

TRIAL LAWYER GEOFFREY FIEGER
Lawyer Geoffrey Fieger says he will not be a candidate for mayor in the first round of Detroit elections early next year. However, he held open the possibility of running for mayor later in the year. Says he can’t save Detroit but he can inspire people. Fieger goes out of his way to assail former Governor John Engler and the Michigan Chamber of Commerce. Fieger suggests that current Detroit Mayor Ken Cockrel may end up having legal problems himself. On fixing Detroit schools, Fieger suggests all of the metro Detroit school systems should be regionalized.

PANEL: THE MARKET BAILOUT
The EOMP panel discusses the $700 billion dollar bailout of Wall Street--and how it might play on Main Street. There’s some big moves being made in Washington, DC without a lot of dialogue. And of course, politics is being played by all parts. The deregulation of Wall Street was signed into law by Bill Clinton and the Democrat Congress has had oversight responsibilities for the past two years. When businesses do bad things and mismanage themselves, they should go out of business. Bailouts are bad policy.
