Beatty Rejects Plea Deal

Detroit (WWJ)  -- No deal!  Christine Beatty, the former chief of staff to outgoing Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has rejected offers that included pleading guilty to two felony counts and serving time in jail.

Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Robert Spada told Circuit Court Judge David Groner the new deal, offered last Friday, included having Beatty plead guity to two counts of obstruction of justice.  Beatty would've spent 150 days in jail and five years on probation.  She also would have had to pay a $125,000 fine.

Defense attorney Mayor Morganroth rejected the offer and instead will take his case before a jury.

The rejection came after three hours of negotiations Monday afternoon involving Judge Groner and both sides.

The next court date is Friday.  Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Timothy Kenney will preside over the trial.

An earlier plea deal, which also was rejected, called for Beatty to spend 60 days in jail.

In March, Beatty was charged with perjury and obstruction of justice. She and Kilpatrick were accused of lying when they denied an affair during testimony in a lawsuit filed by ex-police officers.

Sexually explicit text messages first published by the Detroit Free Press contradicted the denials.

Kilpatrick, a Democrat, already has pleaded guilty and leaves office Thursday. He goes to jail for four months in late October.
