Michigan Fall Color Could be Brilliant This Year, AAA Says

A few trees in some parts of Michigan have already started to show their fall foliage. AAA Michigan says that could be the harbinger of an excellent fall color season – if Mother Nature cooperates.

The cool summer with substantial rainfall early points to a promising season statewide between mid-September, when the show usually begins in the north, and late-October, when it ends in southern Michigan. Add that to the likelihood that more Michiganders will vacation close to home this year, and it could add up to great news for businesses that benefit from foliage-related tourism.

But, AAA warns, a lot depends on the weather in the weeks ahead. Brilliant fall color depends greatly on conditions in September and October. The best combination would be sunny days coupled with cool nights.

Michigan offers a lot of leaf-peeping opportunities. The state has more than 18.6 million acres of forested land, two national shorelines, nearly 100 state parks and recreation areas, hundreds of local and regional parks, three national forests and state forests. And along the way to see the trees, tourists can enjoy 160 waterfalls, along with pumpkin patches, wineries, cider mills, fall festivals and a lot more.

AAA recommends two adults traveling in Michigan budget $211.19 per day for lodging and meals.

Beginning September 10, fall color watchers looking for the best viewing opportunities can call Travel Michigan at (888) 78-GREAT (784-7328) for color updates provided by AAA Michigan each Wednesday through October. Updates also will be on at www.AAA.com.
