Mayor Removal Hearing Suspended

Governor Jennifer Granholm's hearing on whether to remove Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was suspended Thursday, after the proceedings were rendered moot by Kilpatrick's plea deal and resignation.

Granholm said  that she technically is postponing the hearing until Sept. 22, but will cancel it as long as Kilpatrick resigns from office as he said he Thursday, in Wayne Country Circuit Court.

The Detroit City Council had asked Granholm to use her executive powers to remove Kilpatrick from office for misconduct in a whistle-blower's lawsuit.

Granholm took a full day of testimony Wednesday as Kilpatrick's legal team negotiated the plea deal that lead to his resignation. Kilpatrick faces four months in jail and five years of probation as part of the plea deal.
