DETROIT (WWJ) -- A plea may be eminent in the Kwame Kilpatrick case -- although it was unclear Wednesday night whether a firm agreement had been reached. According to the Wayne Country Prosecutors office, it was expected that the mayor will plead guilty to perjury charges the morning of Thursday, Sept. 4 at 9 a.m.
Meantime, the mayor's attorney Jim Thomas told reporters that "no firm agreement" had been reached as of Wednesday evening.
"There has been apparently some mistaken information that has been leaked to the media about the fact was an agreement," Thomas said.
"So, I guess tomorrow the question is going to become whether that does occur or does not occur," he said. Other sources also told WWJ Newsradio 950's Vicki Thomas that a plea deal had not been reached.
This surprise development came as Governor Jennifer Granholm was holding a hearing to decide whether or not to remove Kilpatrick from office.
Wednesday evening, WWJ's Marie Osborne talked with Detroit City Council member Sheila Cockrel who said what she's been looking forward to is a resolution to what she calls an "unfortunate, tragic crisis." Listen:
"It's best for the city that the mayor step aside. Personally, I think it's better that he step aside, as opposed to being put out of office," Cockrel said.
"Frankly, at this point, I really want to wait until, if there is a plea deal, it's entered on record in a court of competent jurisdiction, and accepted by a a sitting judge -- because this appears to be a very fluid situation," she said.
Mayor Kilpatrick, along with his former top aide Christine Beatty, is charged with perjury, conspiracy, misconduct and obstruction of justice. The pair stands accused of lying during the 2007 Whistleblowers' trial about having an extramarital affair and their roles in the firing of a deputy police chief.
If an agreement has been reached, Wayne Country Prosecutor Kym Worthy planned to make a brief statement to the press after the plea was entered on record.
