Detroit (WWJ/AP) -- A judge ruled Tuesday that Detroit Mayor Jame Kilpatrick may remove his tether, but he still can't leave Metro Detroit.
Wayne County Circuit Judge David Groner decided to loosen Detroit Mayor Jame Kilpatrick's bond restrictions, saying he can remove the electronic tether but said the mayor's travel will remain restricted to the metropolitan area.
WWJ Newsradio 950 carried the hearing live. Listen:
The decision was made after the judge heard arguments from lawyers for the mayor and the Michigan attorney general's office, which is prosecuting the assault case.
Kilpatrick was in court for the decision. The travel restrictions prevented the Democratic mayor from attending his party's convention last week in Denver.
The assault charges stem from a confrontation in July when a sheriff's detective says Kilpatrick shoved him into another investigator as they were attempting to serve a subpoena on the mayor's friend.
Earlier Tuesday, Wayne County Circuit Judge Robert Ziolkowski ruled that Governor Jennifer Granholm can hold a hearing Wednesday to possibly force Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick from office. The hearing was scheduled for 9 a.m. More on this here.
