Detroit (WWJ) -- Like others across the region, Detroit City Council members were reacting Friday to the latest criminal charges facing Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.
WWJ Newsradio 950's Florence Walton spoke with City Council president, Ken Cockrell Jr., who is calling on Detroit's business community to speak out.
"Part of the reluctance on the part of many of our bussiness leaders to speak out on this is that many of our business leaders don't live in the city of Detroit, don't look like most Detroiters, are not African American," Cockrell said.
"My take on that is that if you're doing business in the city of Detroit; if you own assets in the City of Detroit; if your corporate headquarters, or other buildings that your own and opperate out of are opperating in the city of Detroit -- you have a voice."
Cockrell called Friday's events another chapter in a sad saga he hopes will end soon.
Meanwhile, the Detroit City Council has unanimously approved rules to be followed during upcoming hearings designed to force Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick from office. The rules will follow those of general court procedures that include allowing Kilpatrick legal representation and cross-examination of witnesses.
Council attorney William Goodman said the mayor's office has received copies of the rules. The rules call for the council to render a decision even if Kilpatrick or his representative does not appear at the hearing.
The forfeiture hearings are scheduled to begin on August 18.
