DMC Gets $1.7 National Brain Injury Grant

The Southeastern Michigan Traumatic Brain Injury System, housed at DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan and the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Wayne State University, has been awarded a five-year grant totaling $1.7 million from the U.S. Department of Education's National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research.

The grant earns RIM the rare distinction of being one of only 16 Centers of Excellence in the country for the care and research of those with traumatic brain injury.

SEMTBIS is a federally funded "model system" of care for individuals who sustain a traumatic brain injury and is a joint effort between Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan and Wayne State University's School of Medicine. This Center of Excellence model allows for the efficient and continuous care of people with traumatic brain injuries and their families, based on an evidenced-based practice model of care that integrates cutting-edge research findings into clinical care of patients.

SEMTBIS conducts ground breaking research in the fields of neuropsychology, rehabilitation psychology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation, sharing the resulting innovations with other traumatic brain injury professionals and researchers throughout the world. This ongoing research is vital to future advances in the treatment of brain injury.

DMC's Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan is one of the nation's largest hospitals specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation. The Institute is home to many innovative programs, including the Southeastern Michigan Traumatic Brain Injury System and the Center for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery, a world-class facility designed to implement and study innovative treatments in spinal cord injury recovery.
