Cruisin' MotorCities

Crusin’ MotorCities, a new automotive celebration, will drive into Detroit the week prior to the 2008 Woodward Dream Cruise. The event begins from Friday, Aug. 8 to Saturday, Aug. 16. It will sprawl beyond Detroit and into cities like Flint, Auburn Hills, and places in between.

“The Motor City will be revved up with excitement this summer,” said Christopher Ilitch., president and CEO of Ilitch Holdings, Inc., and chairman of the Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Cruisin’ MotorCities will have the events that appeal to everyone and should be a huge draw or our regions this year, and years to come. And that’s a good thing for all municipalities throughout the metropolitan Detroit area, the state our residents as well as visitors throughout the area.”

The event jump starts with the free Detroit Festival of Speed and Style. Based at Campus Martius Park in Detroit, the fest begins with a “Hot Latin Night,” on August 8, featuring high-style, low-rider custom cars and hot rods set to exciting Latin and Hispanic music. The fest itself takes place Sunday, August 10. It will feature classic and high performance vehicles from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s.

“Cars are an important part of our past, our present and our future,” said Gary Familian, managing director, MotorCites National Heritage Area. “This is an opportunity to celebrate one of the industries that made the D what we are today. We really encourage everyone to cruise MotorCities, take in the sights and the sounds of all that makes this a great region, right in our backyard.”

Some other events include AutoFair at the Michign State Fair Grounds, Model T rides around Campus Martius, a Flint to the Fairgrounds Motorcycle Rides, GM Tours, and the Woodward Dream Cruise.
