Granholm Asks Bush for Disaster Area Declaration

Lansing (AP)  -- Gov. Jennifer Granholm has asked President Bush to declare a major disaster for parts of Michigan following severe storms in mid-June.

Granholm asked Thursday for federal aid to partially cover the costs to the state and local governments in responding to the June 6-13 storms that caused extensive flooding and wind damage in a 12-county area.

The counties include: Allegan, Barry, Eaton, Ingham, Lake, Manistee, Mason, Missaukee, Osceola, Ottawa, Saginaw and Wexford.

Granholm says current estimates put the cost on emergency measures at nearly $19.5 million.

Federal assessment teams in Michigan after the storms found damaged roads, bridges and water control structures.
