Detroit City Hall Won't Reopen Monday

Detroit (WWJ)  -- The cleanup at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center in downton Detroit will continue into next week.  The building will not reopen Monday as originally thought.

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick said late Thursday the building would reopen Wednesday.

Gregory McDuffee, General Manager of the Detroit-Wayne Joint Building Authority said Thursday tenant and visitor safety remain the Authority’s top priority.  The Authority owns the center.

Contract workers Thursday afternoon were still in the process of re-establishing full electric service and ensuring all systems are fully operational and safe for occupancy.

The building will reopen once full power is restored and inspections completed.  Workers told WWJ's Vickie Thomas Thursday morning that the building still smelled inside.  Work will continue throughout the holiday weekend.

The situation will be reevaluated and additional information will be released on Monday.

The center was closed June 27th when a fire and power loss occurred after a lightning strike caused a power surge that damaged three transformers.

The executive and legislative offices for the City of Detroit, the Third Judicial Circuit Court and Probate Court for the County of Wayne and the offices of the Wayne County Clerk and City of Detroit Clerk are in the center.
