Police Chief, Fire Captain Killed in Crash

The Chelsea Police Chief and a fire department captain were killed in a helicopter crash in Washtenaw County's Scio Township Thursday afternoon.

Sheriff's Department spokesman Dave Egeler said Chief Riley Scott Sumner and Captain Matt Tuttle were killed when Tuttle's helicopter crashed near I-94 and Zeeb Road.   Egeler said they were assisting the State Police fugitive team in a search for a suspect who ran from police during a traffic stop along the freeway.

The Federal Aviation Administration has investigators on the scene.   Members of the National Transportation Safety Board were also expected on the scene Thursday night.

The Mayor of Chelsea,  Ann Feeney,  told WWJ's Marie Osborne, Chief Sumner was "just a great guy."  "He was funny and fun...a great father of two little kids, a great husband,  he was just a great guy," Feeney said.   When asked about Tuttle,  Mayor Feeney said he was committed to being a firefighter, "loved his job and worked hard at it."
