New Airline Starts at Metro Today

Romulus (WWJ)  -- Metro Airport is the latest destination for Southern Skyways.

The airline begins new, non-stop flights between Rockford, Illinois, and Detroit today, June 6.

It's the third time an airline has tried a Rockford-to-Detroit route. Northwest Airlines served the Rockford-to-Detroit market with commuter planes until 2001 and again in 2005-06.

Initially, one round trip flight will run on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, but Southern Skyway officials have said that more could be added if demand is there.

No connecting flights are being offered; travelers, including auto industry executives, are considered the target market.

Southern Skyways is the fourth new carrier to sign with Metro Airport in the past three months.  Southern Skyways also offers service in Denver, Charleston, WV, Myrtle Beach, and Wilkes-Barre, PA.
