Teacher's Rap Highlights Education

Southfield (WWJ)  -- Rap music makes it's way into the classroom.

DJ Duey is a teacher who's using rhythm and rhyme to get through to his young elementary and middle school students in Southgate.  Duey has produced an educational CD of rap music designed to teach children Math, Science, English and Social Studies.  For example, in a song about verbs, Duey raps, "Rap is an action word, clap is an action word.  An action word is verb."

Duey says he keeps the same beat and flow of popular rap music, but his message is a lot different than what young people hear on the radio.  He compares his CD to the popular School House Rock series that many of today's parents enjoyed as kids.

Duey is getting positive feedback from teachers, parents and students.  He says he's heard from children who've gone from getting C's in Math, to now placing on the honor roll.
