Judge Selected in Text-Message Scandal

Detroit (WWJ)  -- 36th District Court Judge Ronald Giles will hear the preliminary hearing for Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former aide Christine Beatty.

Judge Ronald Giles was picked on a blind draw last week. Giles was one of four judges in rotation for exams the week of June 9, the day Kilpatrick and Beatty's examinations begin.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy will contest the selection and seek to have a visiting judge hear the case.  Last week Worthy said a visiting judge would avoid conflicts of interest.

At least one 36th District Court Judge, Ruth Carter, is expected to be called as a witness in the case.  Carter was Corporation Counsel for Mayor Kilpatrick in 2002-03.

The preliminary hearing will decide if Kilpatrick and Beatty will stand trial on perjury, misconduct, and obstruction of justice charges in a text-messaging scandal.

A profile on the 36th District Court website says Giles was born in the city of Detroit where he has lived most of his life.  He attended Cass Technical High School.  As an attorney, Judge Giles practiced for 22 years and worked as general counsel for a community mental health organization, a hearing referee for the Michigan Department of Civil Rights and maintained a general law practice with a concentration in Juvenile law, Criminal law, Family law, Immigration and Civil Rights.

Judge Giles resides in Detroit with his wife of 23 years, Joyce V. Hayes-Giles who sits on the Detroit School Board, and their daughters.
