'On The Move' Jump-Starts Student Success

Dearborn (WWJ)  -- They showed up at University of Michigan Dearborn -- all with the same thought in mind: embark on a new path to a career.  Nineteen-year-old Quenton Stinson hopes to enroll at U-M Dearborn this fall.

He's looking to the "On The Move" program to help him find direction in life, "I was tired of just sitting and doing nothing, working -- tired of dead end jobs," Stinson (pictured, left) told WWJ Newsradio 950's Pat Sweeting. "I wanted to better myself," he said.

Steering himself in a new direction, Stinson plans to study massage therapy and business management.

High School Librarian Carol Sprague (pictured, right) , the mother of one of Quenton's former co-workers, urged him to sign-up for the program, "I think that in order to succeed you have to really want your goal, and I think he wants it," Sprague said. "I think he just didn't quite know how to get started. So we needed to kick-start it," she said.

"On The Move" offers economically and socially disadvantaged women and men the chance for a college education.

The “On the Move” program is seeking volunteer mentors. For information on becoming a volunteer mentor, or for more information about the program, contact the UM-Dearborn Women’s Resource Center at (313) 583-6445.
